I was raised in Portland and lived there for 33 years and just left 2 years ago. There is not much in Portland except maybe beaches and mountains wich I do miss since Houston is so flat. I would maybe take the kids to Washington D.C there is the Smithsonian Instute wich is big and does not cost money to get into and it would be fun plus educational. Now if you are looking to go to the Northwest I would go to Seattle there is much more to do in Seattle like pike place market and wharf on Alaska Way and you can catch a ferry and go out on the puget sound or to woodbey island, but if you have the money I would take the kids to D.C. for the culture and history of our country plus D.C. is also a neat and fun place.
